Formula

  • quarter = ceil(month ÷ 3)
  • Quarter start month = (quarter − 1) × 3 + 1; quarter end month = start month + 2, ending on the last day of that month.
  • Day of the quarter = days from the quarter start to the date, plus 1.

Worked example

15 May 2026: month 5, so ceil(5 ÷ 3) = 2, which is Q2. The quarter runs from 1 April to 30 June 2026, which is 30 + 31 + 30 = 91 days. The date is day 30 + 15 = 45 of the quarter.

Frequently asked questions

How are calendar quarters defined?

A calendar year is split into four quarters of three months: Q1 is January to March, Q2 is April to June, Q3 is July to September and Q4 is October to December.

How do I find the quarter of a date?

Divide the month number by 3 and round up. May is month 5, and 5 ÷ 3 = 1.67, which rounds up to 2, so 15 May is in Q2.

How many days are in each quarter?

Q1 has 90 days (91 in a leap year), Q2 has 91, and Q3 and Q4 have 92 each. Q2 is April 30 + May 31 + June 30 = 91 days.

Does this work for a fiscal year?

No. It uses calendar quarters that start in January. A company whose fiscal year starts in another month numbers its quarters differently, so check its own calendar.
