Formula
timestamp = days since 1970-01-01 × 86400 + hour × 3600 + minute × 60 + second
To go the other way, divide the timestamp by 86,400 for whole days since the epoch, then split the remainder into hours, minutes and seconds. All values are UTC.
Worked example
The timestamp 1700000000 is 19,675 whole days (1,699,920,000 seconds) plus 80,000 seconds. 19,675 days after 1 January 1970 is 14 November 2023, and 80,000 seconds is 22 hours, 13 minutes and 20 seconds, so the result is 2023-11-14 22:13:20 UTC.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
It is the number of seconds that have passed since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, called the Unix epoch. The timestamp 1700000000 is 14 November 2023 at 22:13:20 UTC.
How do I convert a Unix timestamp to a date?
Divide the seconds into days (86,400 seconds each) and count forward from 1 January 1970. For example, 946684800 seconds is exactly 10,957 days, which lands on 1 January 2000.
Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?
This converter uses seconds, which have 10 digits for dates from 2001 to 2286. A 13-digit value is in milliseconds, so divide it by 1000 first.
Can a timestamp be negative?
Yes. Negative values are moments before the epoch, so -86400 is 31 December 1969 at 00:00:00 UTC.
