Formula

minutes = hour × 60 + minute for the start and the end.

duration = end - start, and if that is negative, duration = end + 1440 - start (the end is on the next day).

decimal hours = duration ÷ 60

Worked example

Start 09:30 (570 minutes), end 17:45 (1,065 minutes): 1,065 - 570 = 495 minutes, which is 8 hours 15 minutes or 495 ÷ 60 = 8.25 decimal hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the time between two clock times?

Turn each time into minutes after midnight and subtract. 09:30 is 570 and 17:45 is 1,065, so the gap is 495 minutes, which is 8 hours 15 minutes.

What happens when the end time is earlier than the start?

The end is treated as the next day. From 22:00 to 06:30 the span is 390 + 1,440 - 1,320 = 510 minutes, or 8 hours 30 minutes.

What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours are total minutes divided by 60. 8 hours 15 minutes is 495 ÷ 60 = 8.25 hours.

How do I enter afternoon times?

Use the 24-hour clock: 1 pm is 13, 5:45 pm is 17 and 45, and midnight is 0. Identical start and end times give a duration of zero.
