How it works

  1. Count the whole years from the date of birth to the chosen date (a birthday on 29 February counts on 1 March in common years).
  2. From that last birthday, count the whole months.
  3. The days left over are the days.

The total days figure is the number of calendar days between the two dates. All dates are treated as calendar dates, so time zones and daylight saving never change the answer.

Worked example

Born 15 May 1990, measured on 14 May 2024:

  • Whole years: 33 (the 34th birthday is one day away).
  • Whole months after 15 May 2023: 11, up to 15 April 2024.
  • Days after 15 April 2024: 29.

The age is 33 years, 11 months, 29 days, and the next birthday is in 1 day.

Frequently asked questions

How is age calculated in years, months and days?

The calculator counts the whole years since the date of birth, then the whole months after the last birthday, then the remaining days. From 15 May 1990 to 14 May 2024 that is 33 years, 11 months and 29 days.

When does a 29 February birthday count as a year older?

In years that are not leap years this calculator counts the birthday on 1 March. Someone born on 29 February 2000 turns 23 on 1 March 2023.

Why do I see a date error?

The date of birth must be a real date and must not be after the date you measure to. A date such as 30 February does not exist.
