Formula

  • regular hours = min(hours worked, threshold)
  • overtime hours = max(0, hours worked − threshold)
  • total pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier

Worked example

45 hours worked at 20 an hour, overtime after 40 hours at 1.5×: regular pay is 40 × 20 = 800. Overtime is 5 hours at 20 × 1.5 = 30 an hour, which is 150. Total pay is 950.

Frequently asked questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

Hours up to the threshold are paid at the normal rate. Hours beyond it are paid at the rate times the multiplier. With 45 hours at 20, a 40-hour threshold and 1.5×, you get 40 × 20 + 5 × 30 = 950.

What multiplier should I use?

Use the one in your contract or employer policy. 1.5 means time and a half and 2 means double time. This calculator does not assume any rule, so enter the value that applies to you.

What if I worked fewer hours than the threshold?

Then there is no overtime. 38 hours at 20 with a 40-hour threshold is 38 × 20 = 760 in regular pay and 0 in overtime pay.

Is the result before or after tax?

It is gross pay before any tax or deductions, based only on the numbers you enter. Bonuses, shift premiums and unpaid breaks are not included.
