Formula
Total days is the difference between the two dates counted in whole calendar days (the end date is not counted).
For years, months and days:
years= the number of whole years from the start date to the end datemonths= the whole months left after those yearsdays= the days left after those months
If the start day does not exist in a month (for example 31 in April), the month is counted as complete on that month's last day.
Worked example
From 15 January 2024 to 20 March 2024:
- 15 Jan to 15 Mar is 31 + 29 = 60 days (2024 is a leap year)
- plus 5 more days to 20 Mar gives 65 total days
- as years, months and days: 0 years, 2 months, 5 days
Frequently asked questions
How many days are there between two dates?
Count the calendar days from the start date up to the end date, not counting the end date itself. From 15 January 2024 to 20 March 2024 that is 16 + 29 + 20 = 65 days.
How are years, months and days worked out?
The calculator counts whole years, then whole months, then the days left over. 15 January 2024 to 20 March 2024 is 0 years, 2 months and 5 days.
Is the end date included in the count?
No. The difference between 1 June and 2 June is 1 day. If you want both dates to count, add 1 to the total.
Why do I get a date error?
Both dates must be real calendar dates, and the end date cannot be earlier than the start date. A date such as 30 February does not exist.
