Formula
Business days are the Monday to Friday days from the start date to the end date, with both dates included. Public holidays are not removed.
calendar days = (end − start) + 1
business days = 5 × full weeks + weekdays in the leftover days
Worked example
Monday 1 January 2024 to Wednesday 31 January 2024:
- calendar days: 31
- 4 full weeks (1 to 28 Jan) give 4 × 5 = 20 business days
- the 3 leftover days (Mon 29, Tue 30, Wed 31) are all weekdays, so 23 business days
- the other 8 days are weekend days
Frequently asked questions
Which days count as business days here?
Monday to Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are not counted. Public holidays and company days off are not removed, because they differ by country and employer. Subtract them yourself.
Are the start and end dates included?
Yes, both are counted if they fall on a weekday. From Monday 1 January 2024 to Wednesday 31 January 2024 there are 31 calendar days and 23 business days.
How do I count working days without holidays removed?
Multiply the full weeks by 5 and add the weekdays in the days left over. 31 days is 4 full weeks (20 business days) plus 3 days, Monday to Wednesday, for 23.
Why do I get a date error?
Both dates must be real calendar dates, and the end date cannot be earlier than the start date.
