Formula
result = value × (bits in the from unit) ÷ (bits in the to unit)
Every unit is stored as a fixed multiple of the base unit (the bit), so any pair converts in one step.
Worked example
1 TB to GiB: 1 TB = 10¹² bytes and 1 GiB = 2³⁰ = 1,073,741,824 bytes, so 10¹² ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 931.322575 GiB.
Quick reference
Decimal: 1 kB = 1000 B, 1 MB = 1000 kB. Binary: 1 KiB = 1024 B, 1 MiB = 1024 KiB.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
Drive makers use decimal units (1 TB = 10¹² bytes) while many operating systems report binary units (1 GiB = 2³⁰ bytes). 10¹² ÷ 2³⁰ = 931.32 GiB.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes (SI), while 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes (2²⁰, IEC). A MiB is about 4.9% larger.
How many bits are in a byte?
8. So a 100 Mbit/s link moves at most 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB per second.
How many MB is 1 GB?
In decimal units 1 GB is 1,000 MB. In binary units 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB.
