Triathlon Time Calculator
Add your five split times to get a finish time, with your swim pace, bike speed and run pace for the race distance. Or enter a target finish time and get estimated splits from typical age-group proportions. The predicted splits are rough estimates, not a race plan. Use it to add triathlon splits into a total time or see an Olympic-distance split plan for a target finish.

Formula
total = swim + T1 + bike + T2 + runswim pace per 100 m = swim time / swim distance x 100bike speed = bike distance / bike time,run pace = run time / run distance- Predicted splits:
split = target total x share, with the shares below.
| Race | Swim | T1 | Bike | T2 | Run |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sprint | 16% | 2% | 50% | 1.5% | 30.5% |
| Olympic | 15% | 1.5% | 51% | 1% | 31.5% |
| Half | 11% | 1% | 52% | 1% | 35% |
| Full | 10% | 0.5% | 51.5% | 0.5% | 37.5% |
The shares are typical age-group proportions chosen as rough estimates; real races vary with course, conditions and your strengths. Distances used: sprint 0.75 / 20 / 5 km, Olympic 1.5 / 40 / 10 km, half 1.93 / 90 / 21.0975 km, full 3.86 / 180 / 42.195 km.
Worked example
Olympic splits of 30 + 2 + 75 + 1 + 45 minutes give 2:33:00. Swim pace is 1800 s / 15 = 2:00 per 100 m, bike speed 32 km/h, run pace 4:30 per km.
Target 3:00:00 (10800 s) on Olympic shares: swim 27:00, T1 2:42, bike 1:31:48, T2 1:48, run 56:42.
When to use it
Use it after a race to see which leg took the most time, or before one to turn a goal into rough targets.
Typical values (rules of thumb)
- The bike usually takes about half of total race time and the run about a third.
- A beginner sprint triathlon often takes 1:15 to 1:45.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting transitions. T1 and T2 count on the clock.
- Using pool swim paces for open water, where sighting and currents usually slow you.
How it differs from nearby tools
The swim pace and cycling speed calculators each focus on one leg. This page combines all five parts.
Frequently asked questions
How is triathlon finish time calculated?
It is the sum of five parts: swim, T1, bike, T2 and run. For an Olympic race with a 30 minute swim, 2 minute T1, 75 minute bike, 1 minute T2 and 45 minute run, the total is 153 minutes, or 2:33:00.
How are the predicted splits worked out?
Your target time is split using typical age-group proportions for the distance. For Olympic these are about 15% swim, 1.5% T1, 51% bike, 1% T2 and 31.5% run. A 3:00:00 target gives a 27:00 swim, 1:31:48 bike and 56:42 run. These are estimates: your own strengths, the course and the weather will change them.
What are the standard triathlon distances?
Sprint is usually 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run. Olympic is 1.5 km, 40 km and 10 km. A half distance (70.3) is 1.93 km, 90 km and 21.1 km, and a full distance (140.6) is 3.86 km, 180 km and 42.2 km. Some events differ slightly, so the pace figures are approximate.
How are the swim pace, bike speed and run pace found?
They divide each split by the preset distance. A 30 minute Olympic swim is 1800 s over 1500 m, which is 2:00 per 100 m. A 75 minute bike over 40 km is 32 km/h, and a 45 minute run over 10 km is 4:30 per km.
Are transitions included in the total?
Yes. T1 and T2 are added to the total and shown separately. Enter 0 if your timing system folds transitions into the swim and bike splits.
How long does an Olympic distance triathlon take?
The Olympic distance is a 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run. Splits of 30, 2, 75, 1 and 45 minutes give a total of 2:33:00, with a 2:00 per 100 m swim, 32 km/h bike and 4:30 per km run.
What are good splits for a 1 hour 30 sprint triathlon?
On the sprint shares used here, a 1:30:00 finish is a 14:24 swim, 1:48 T1, 45:00 bike (about 26.7 km/h), 1:21 T2 and 27:27 run (5:29 per km). These are rough estimates, not a plan.
