Formula
Win % = (W + 0.5 x T) / (W + L + T)Games back = ((leader W - W) + (L - leader L)) / 2Wins needed = ceil(target x season games - (W + 0.5 x T)), never below 0Games remaining = season games - (W + L + T)
Worked example
Record 55-45, leader 60-40, 162-game season, target 60%.
- Win % = 55 / 100 = 55.00%
- Games back = (5 + 5) / 2 = 5
- 0.60 x 162 = 97.2, minus 55 = 42.2, so 43 more wins
- Games remaining = 162 - 100 = 62, so the target is reachable
Assumption: the remaining games are decided by a win or a loss, not a tie.
When to use it
Use it for a league table, a season so far or a playoff race. Enter wins, losses and ties to get the winning percentage, then see how far behind the leader you are and how many more wins a target needs.
Typical values (rules of thumb)
- .500 means as many wins as losses.
- In a 162 game baseball season, 90 wins (.556) is usually a playoff contender and 100 wins (.617) a top team.
- In an 82 game basketball season, 50 wins (.610) is a strong year.
Common mistakes
- Counting a tie as zero. Most leagues count it as half a win; some count it as a loss. Check your league rules.
- Dividing wins by losses instead of by games played.
- Forgetting to reduce the games remaining when a target is out of reach.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate win percentage?
Win % = (wins + 0.5 x ties) / games played. A 55-45 record is 55 / 100 = 55%. A record of 80-60-4 is (80 + 2) / 144 = 56.94%.
How are games back calculated?
Games back = ((leader wins - your wins) + (your losses - leader losses)) / 2. At 55-45 behind a 60-40 leader that is (5 + 5) / 2 = 5. A negative number means you are ahead. Ties are ignored in this formula.
How many wins do I need to reach a target percentage?
Wins needed = target x season games - current wins (plus half the ties), rounded up. For 60% of 162 games that is 97.2, so a team at 55 wins needs 43 more, as long as at least 43 games remain.
Do ties count as half a win?
Yes, ties count as half a win and a full game played, as in many leagues. Some leagues ignore ties or use points instead, so check your standings rules. The wins needed assume the remaining games are not tied.
What is the win percentage for a 10-6-2 record?
Counting the tie as half a win, (10 + 1) / 18 = .611.
How many games back is 90-72 behind a 95-67 leader?
Games back = ((95 - 90) + (72 - 67)) / 2 = 5.
What win percentage is 100 wins in 162 games?
100 / 162 = .617, or 61.7%. That is a top team in a baseball season.
