Formula
pace per km = total seconds ÷ distance in kmpace per mile = pace per km × 1.609344speed (km/h) = distance ÷ (total seconds ÷ 3600)
Worked example
10 km in 50:00 is 3,000 seconds. Pace is 3,000 ÷ 10 = 300 seconds, so 5:00 per km. Per mile that is 300 × 1.609344 = 483 seconds, or 8:03. Speed is 10 ÷ (3,000 ÷ 3,600) = 12 km/h.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your total time by the distance. Running 10 km in 50 minutes is 3,000 seconds ÷ 10 = 300 seconds, a pace of 5:00 per km.
How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
Multiply by 1.609344. A pace of 5:00 per km is 300 × 1.609344 = 483 seconds, or 8:03 per mile.
How do I get speed in km/h from pace?
Divide 3,600 by the pace in seconds per km. A 5:00 pace is 3,600 ÷ 300 = 12 km/h.
What pace do I need for a 3:30 marathon?
A marathon is 42.195 km. 3 hours 30 minutes is 12,600 seconds, and 12,600 ÷ 42.195 is about 299 seconds, so roughly 4:59 per km.
