Formula

  • Bracket size = next power of two >= teams; byes = size - teams; rounds = log2(size)
  • Single elimination matches = teams - 1
  • Double elimination matches = 2 x teams - 2 (2 x teams - 1 if the final is replayed)
  • Round robin games = n x (n - 1) / 2; rounds = n - 1 for even n, n for odd n

Worked example

12 teams:

  • Next power of two is 16, so 4 byes and 4 rounds
  • Single elimination: 11 matches
  • Double elimination: 22 matches (23 with a bracket reset)
  • Round robin: 12 x 11 / 2 = 66 games over 11 rounds

Byes go to the top seeds and are not counted as matches.

When to use it

Use it before a tournament to plan courts, referees and time. It tells you how many rounds and matches a single elimination, double elimination or round robin format needs, and how many byes fill the bracket when the team count is not a power of two.

Typical values

Teams Bracket Byes Single matches Round robin games
8 8 0 7 28
10 16 6 9 45
12 16 4 11 66
32 32 0 31 496

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that every match except the champion's final path eliminates one team, so single elimination always needs teams minus one matches.
  • Counting byes as matches.
  • Planning a round robin for a big field. Games grow with the square of teams.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the bracket for my number of teams?

The bracket size is the next power of two at or above the number of teams. With 12 teams the size is 16, so there are 4 byes and 4 rounds.

How many matches are in a single elimination tournament?

Always teams minus 1, because every match eliminates exactly one team and all but the champion must go. 12 teams need 11 matches. Byes do not count as matches.

How many matches in double elimination?

2n - 2 if the winners-bracket champion wins the final, or 2n - 1 if the losers-bracket champion forces a reset. 12 teams need 22 or 23 matches.

How many games are in a round robin?

Every team plays every other team once: n(n-1)/2 games. 12 teams play 66 games over 11 rounds. With an odd number of teams one team rests each round, so 5 teams need 5 rounds for 10 games.

How many matches are in a single elimination tournament with 10 teams?

Every match eliminates one team, so 10 teams need 10 - 1 = 9 matches. The bracket is 16 slots, so 6 teams get a first round bye, and there are 4 rounds.

How many games are in a round robin with 8 teams?

Each team plays every other team once, so 8 x 7 / 2 = 28 games. With an even number of teams the schedule has 7 rounds.

How many games does a 32 team double elimination tournament have?

A double elimination bracket needs 2 x 32 - 2 = 62 matches, or 63 if the grand final is replayed. A single elimination bracket for the same field needs 31 matches over 5 rounds.
