Formula

  • PPG = total points / games played
  • Projected total = PPG x games in the season
  • Needed per remaining game = (target average x season games - points so far) / games remaining, never below 0

Worked example

1,230 points after 41 of 82 games, target average 28.

  • PPG = 1,230 / 41 = 30
  • Projected total = 30 x 82 = 2,460
  • Target total = 28 x 82 = 2,296, so 1,066 more points over 41 games = 26 per game

The projection assumes the current pace continues. Games played must be at least 1 and at most the season length; when the season is finished the needed figure is 0.

When to use it

Use it for a player, a team or a fantasy roster. Enter points, games played and season length to get the current average, a projected season total and the average needed from here to hit a target.

Typical values (rules of thumb)

  • In the NBA, scoring 20 points per game is usually viewed as a strong scorer and 25 or more as a star. Team averages have been above 110 points per game in recent seasons.
  • Per game figures depend on minutes and pace, so compare players on similar minutes.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by the full season length instead of games actually played.
  • Projecting from a very small sample. After five games a hot start rarely holds.
  • Including games a player missed in games played.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate points per game?

Divide total points by games played. A player with 1,230 points in 41 games averages 1,230 / 41 = 30.0 points per game.

How is the season total projected?

Multiply current PPG by the number of games in the season. At 30 PPG over an 82-game season that is 2,460 points. It assumes the player keeps scoring at the same pace.

How many points per game do I need to reach a target average?

Needed = (target x season games - points so far) / games remaining. To average 28 over 82 games with 1,230 points after 41 games: (2,296 - 1,230) / 41 = 26.0 points per game.

What if I have already passed my target?

Then the needed figure shows 0, because even scoring nothing would keep you at or above the target average. The calculator needs at least one game played. When the season is finished (no games left) it still shows PPG and the season total, and the needed figure is 0.

How many points per game is a 2,000 point season?

Over an 82 game season, 2,000 / 82 = 24.4 points per game. A player on 600 points after 25 games is averaging 24.0, which projects to 24 x 82 = 1,968 points.

What is a good points per game in basketball?

As a rule of thumb, 10 points per game is a solid role player, 20 is a strong scorer and 25 or more is a star. Compare players on similar minutes, because per game totals depend on playing time.

Is points per game or per 36 minutes better?

Points per game is simple and shows total output, while per 36 minutes adjusts for playing time. Use per game for season totals and awards, and per minute when comparing starters with bench players.
