Formula

For the first n values, sorted from smallest to largest:

  • Mean: sum of values ÷ n
  • Median: the middle value, or for even n the average of the two middle values
  • Mode: the value (or values) that appear most often; none if every value appears once
  • Range: largest − smallest

Worked example

Values 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 (n = 8): mean 40 ÷ 8 = 5, median (4 + 5) ÷ 2 = 4.5, mode 4 (three times), range 9 − 2 = 7.

Using only the first 3 values (2, 4, 4): mean 10 ÷ 3 = 3.3333, median 4, mode 4, range 2.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find the mean?

Add the values and divide by how many there are. For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 the sum is 40 and 40 ÷ 8 = 5.

How do you find the median?

Sort the values and take the middle one. With an even count, average the two middle values: for the list above they are 4 and 5, so the median is 4.5.

Can there be more than one mode, or none?

Yes. The mode is the most frequent value, so 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 has two modes (2 and 3). If every value appears once there is no mode and the calculator shows a dash.

What does the count box do?

It tells the calculator to use only the first that many boxes. With a count of 3, only the first three numbers are used (2, 4, 4 gives a mean of 3.3333).
