Formula

  • FG% = FGM / FGA
  • 3P% = 3PM / 3PA
  • eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 x 3PM) / FGA
  • PTS = 2 x FGM + 3PM + FTM (three-pointers are already inside FGM)
  • TS% = PTS / (2 x (FGA + 0.44 x FTA))

Worked example

10 of 20 field goals, 3 of 8 threes, 5 of 6 free throws.

  • FG% = 10 / 20 = 50.0%
  • 3P% = 3 / 8 = 37.5%
  • eFG% = 11.5 / 20 = 57.5%
  • Points = 20 + 3 + 5 = 28, TS% = 28 / 45.28 = 61.8%

When to use it

Use it for a game, a season or a player comparison. FG% treats every made shot the same, but a three is worth more than a two and free throws count too. eFG% and TS% correct for that, so they compare shooters fairly.

Typical values (rules of thumb)

  • In recent NBA seasons league FG% has been in the mid 40s, 3P% in the mid 30s and TS% in the mid to high 50s. The numbers change from year to year.
  • A TS% above 60 is generally considered very efficient.

Common mistakes

  • Adding three-pointers on top of field goals made. They are already included in FGM, so the three point fields are a subset.
  • Leaving out free throws when comparing efficiency. Without them you cannot compute TS%.
  • Comparing percentages on very few attempts.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate field goal percentage?

FG% = field goals made / field goals attempted x 100. Making 10 of 20 is 50%. Three-pointers count as field goals, free throws do not.

What is effective field goal percentage?

eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 x 3PM) / FGA. It gives a three extra credit for being worth 1.5 times a two. With 10 of 20 and 3 threes: (10 + 1.5) / 20 = 57.5%.

What is true shooting percentage?

TS% = points / (2 x (FGA + 0.44 x FTA)). It folds free throws in, where 0.44 estimates the share of free throw attempts that end a possession. 28 points on 20 FGA and 6 FTA gives 28 / 45.28 = 61.8%.

How is 3-point percentage calculated?

3P% = 3-pointers made / 3-pointers attempted x 100. Making 3 of 8 is 37.5%. If there are no three-point attempts the tool shows 0%. These are the standard NBA-style definitions.

What is the eFG% for 8 of 20 shooting with 4 threes?

eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 x 3PM) / FGA = (8 + 2) / 20 = 50%, even though plain FG% is only 40%.

What true shooting percentage is 26 points on 20 shots and 8 free throws?

TS% = 26 / (2 x (20 + 0.44 x 8)) = 26 / 47.04 = 55.3%. It counts free throws and the extra value of threes.

What is a good field goal percentage in basketball?

A common rule of thumb is that 45% to 50% is good for a guard or wing and above 55% is typical for a big man who mostly shoots close to the rim. Efficiency measures such as eFG% are better for comparing different shot types.
