Formula
final = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) × (1 − extra ÷ 100)
saved = price − final
Worked example
Price 80, 25% off, then a further 10% off: 80 × 0.75 = 60, then 60 × 0.90 = 54. You save 26, which is 32.5% of 80.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the price by the discount and divide by 100, then subtract. 25% off 80 is 80 × 0.25 = 20, so you pay 60.
What happens with two discounts?
The second discount applies to the already reduced price. 25% off 80 is 60, then a further 10% off is 54. You save 26.
Why are two discounts not added together?
Because the second one is taken from a smaller price. 25% and 10% combine to 32.5%, not 35%.
How do I work out the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount. If you paid 60 after 25% off, the original was 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80.
