Formula

FV = P × (1 + r)^n + C × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r

  • P is the starting amount and C the monthly contribution (added at month end)
  • r is the yearly return ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n is the years × 12
  • At 0% the balance is P + C × n.

Worked example

10,000 to start, 200 a month, 7% a year, 20 years:

  • r = 0.07 ÷ 12, n = 240, (1 + r)^n = 4.0387
  • Starting amount grows to 10,000 × 4.0387 = 40,387.39
  • Contributions grow to 200 × 3.0387 ÷ r = 104,185.33
  • Final balance 144,572.72. You put in 10,000 + 200 × 240 = 58,000, so growth is 86,572.72.

Frequently asked questions

How is the final balance calculated?

FV = P × (1 + r)^n + C × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r, where P is the starting amount, C the monthly contribution, r the monthly rate and n the number of months. 10,000 plus 200 a month at 7% for 20 years gives 144,572.72.

Is the return guaranteed?

No. Real investments rise and fall. The calculator applies one steady rate every year, so it shows a what-if, not a forecast.

When is each contribution added?

At the end of each month, after that month's growth. Interest compounds monthly.

Does it include fees, taxes or inflation?

No. Subtract fund fees from the rate to approximate their effect. Taxes depend on where you live, and the inflation calculator shows what the result may buy in today's money.
