Formula

tax = price × rate ÷ 100

total = price + tax

Worked example

A price of 100 at a rate of 8.25%: tax = 100 × 8.25 ÷ 100 = 8.25, and the total is 100 + 8.25 = 108.25.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the rate and divide by 100. At 8.25% on 100 the tax is 100 × 8.25 ÷ 100 = 8.25, so the total is 108.25.

Which rate should I enter?

Use the rate that applies where you buy. It is often printed on receipts or published by your local tax authority. This calculator does not look rates up.

How is the tax rounded?

The tax is rounded to the nearest cent. On 49.99 at 7% the exact tax is 3.4993, shown as 3.50, for a total of 53.49.

How do I find the price before tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A total of 108.25 at 8.25% is 108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = 100. The VAT calculator has a remove mode for this.
