Formula
Cost per km = L/100 km × price per litre ÷ 100(for mpg:price per gallon ÷ mpgper mile)Cost per day = cost per km × distance driven in a dayCost per year = cost per day × driving days per week × 52Cost per month = cost per year ÷ 12- Conversions: 1 mi = 1.609344 km, 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L, 1 UK gal = 4.54609 L.
Worked example
8 L/100 km at 1.50 per litre: 8 × 1.50 ÷ 100 = 0.12 per km. Driving 40 km a day costs 4.80, over 5 days a week for 52 weeks that is 1,248.00 a year or 104.00 a month. A 5 L/100 km vehicle costs 0.075 per km and 780.00 a year, so the difference is 468.00 a year.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out fuel cost per km?
Multiply litres per 100 km by the price per litre and divide by 100. At 8 L/100 km and 1.50 per litre the cost is 8 x 1.50 / 100 = 0.12 per km.
How are the daily, monthly and yearly costs worked out?
Cost per distance times the distance driven gives the daily cost: 0.12 x 40 km = 4.80. Multiply by driving days per week and 52 weeks for the year (4.80 x 5 x 52 = 1,248.00), and divide the year by 12 for the month (104.00).
How do I convert mpg to cost per mile?
Divide the price per gallon by the mpg. At 25 mpg (US) and 4.00 per US gallon, a mile costs 0.16. Pick the matching gallon, because a UK gallon is larger than a US gallon.
What does the comparison with a second vehicle show?
It repeats the calculation for another fuel economy at the same price and mileage. Comparing 8 and 5 L/100 km at 40 km a day over 5 days a week saves 468.00 a year (1,248.00 against 780.00).
