Formula
- Fuel used (L) = distance (km) × L/100 km ÷ 100. Miles are converted with 1 mi = 1.609344 km, mpg (US) with 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L and mpg (UK) with 1 UK gal = 4.54609 L.
Total cost = fuel used × price per litre + tollsCost per person = total cost ÷ number of people- Round trip doubles the distance. Tolls are taken as the amount for the whole trip.
Worked example
300 km one way at 8 L/100 km: 300 × 8 ÷ 100 = 24 L. At 1.50 per litre the fuel is 24 × 1.50 = 36.00. Add 10.00 of tolls for a total of 46.00. Shared by 3 people that is 15.33 each. As a round trip the fuel is 72.00 and the total 82.00.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Divide the distance by your fuel economy to get the fuel used, then multiply by the fuel price. For 300 km at 8 L/100 km you use 24 L, and at 1.50 per litre that is 36.00.
Does the calculator double the distance for a round trip?
Yes. Choose Round trip and the distance and fuel are doubled. Tolls are not doubled, so enter the tolls for the whole journey. A 300 km round trip at 8 L/100 km uses 48 L.
How is the cost split between passengers?
The total of fuel plus tolls is divided equally by the number of people, the driver included. A 46.00 trip shared by 3 people is 15.33 each.
Which fuel economy units can I use?
Litres per 100 km, miles per US gallon or miles per UK gallon. A UK gallon is 4.54609 L and a US gallon is 3.785411784 L, so 30 mpg (US) is about 7.84 L/100 km.
