Formula
GPA = sum(grade points × credit hours) ÷ sum(credit hours)
Grade points on the 4.0 scale: A+ 4.0, A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0. The 5.0 weighted option adds 1.0 to every passing grade (A = 5.0).
Worked example
| Course | Grade | Credits | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A | 3 | 12.0 |
| 2 | B+ | 3 | 9.9 |
| 3 | A- | 4 | 14.8 |
| 4 | B | 3 | 9.0 |
Total 45.7 quality points over 13 credits: 45.7 ÷ 13 = 3.52. On the 5.0 weighted scale the same courses give 58.7 ÷ 13 = 4.52.
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those quality points up and divide by the total credit hours. An A (4.0) in a 3 credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3 credit course give (12 + 9) ÷ 6 = 3.50.
What grade points does each letter get?
On the 4.0 scale A and A+ are 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7 and F 0. Some schools do not use plus or minus grades, so check your own policy.
What is a 5.0 weighted GPA?
A weighted scale gives extra points for harder courses. This calculator adds 1.0 to every passing grade, so an A is 5.0 and a B is 4.0, while an F stays 0. Schools differ, so it suits courses that are all honors or AP.
Does a 4 credit course count more than a 3 credit one?
Yes. A 4 credit A- adds 3.7 × 4 = 14.8 quality points, while a 3 credit A- adds 11.1. Larger courses move your GPA more.
