Formula

needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w = final weight ÷ 100.

If the result is 0 or below, the target is already secured and 0 is shown. Above 100, it needs extra credit.

Worked example

Current grade 90, target 85, final worth 20% (w = 0.2):

  • Points already kept: 90 × 0.8 = 72
  • Needed: (85 − 72) ÷ 0.2 = 65

So a 65 on the final is enough.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on the final?

Needed score = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a fraction. With a current 90, a target of 85 and a final worth 20%, that is (85 − 72) ÷ 0.2 = 65.

What if the score needed is over 100?

Then the target is out of reach without extra credit. With a current 85, a target of 90 and a final worth 30%, you would need (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 101.7.

What does the weight of the final mean?

It is the share of your course grade that comes from the final. If it is worth 30%, the other 70% of the course is already fixed at your current grade.

What if the result says secured?

It means your current grade, counted at its share of the course, already meets the target even if you scored 0 on the final. A current 95 with a final worth 20% already gives 76 points toward a target of 70.
