Formula
v = d / t, which rearranges to d = v × t and t = d / v.
All values are converted to metres and seconds inside the calculator (1 km = 1000 m, 1 mi = 1609.344 m, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s, 1 km/h = 1 ÷ 3.6 m/s), solved, and converted back to the unit you chose.
Worked example
A sprinter covers 100 m in 9.58 s. Speed = 100 ÷ 9.58 = 10.4384 m/s. Multiply by 3.6 to get 37.58 km/h, or divide by 0.44704 to get 23.35 mph.
A runner at 12 km/h needs 42.195 km ÷ 12 km/h = 3.51625 h for a marathon.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for velocity?
Average speed is distance divided by time, v = d / t. A car that covers 150 km in 2 hours averages 150 ÷ 2 = 75 km/h.
How do I find distance from speed and time?
Multiply speed by time, d = v × t. At 60 mph for 2 hours you travel 60 × 2 = 120 miles. Keep the time unit in step with the speed unit, or let the calculator convert for you.
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is how fast something moves. Velocity is speed with a direction. This calculator uses the straight-line distance covered, so the number it gives is an average speed along that path.
How do I convert m/s to km/h and mph?
Multiply m/s by 3.6 for km/h, and divide m/s by 0.44704 for mph. A sprinter at 10.44 m/s runs at 37.58 km/h, which is 23.35 mph.
