Formula

ρ = m / V, so m = ρ × V and V = m / ρ

  • ρ is density in kg/m³, m is mass in kg and V is volume in m³.
  • 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³, 1 L = 0.001 m³, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ft³ = 0.028316847 m³, so 1 lb/ft³ = 16.018463 kg/m³.

Reference densities (kg/m³)

Material Density
Air (sea level, 15 °C) 1.225
Oak wood 750
Ice 917
Water 1000
Aluminium 2700
Steel 7850
Iron 7874
Copper 8960
Silver 10,490
Lead 11,340
Mercury 13,595.1
Gold 19,320

Worked example

13.5 kg occupying 5 L (0.005 m³):

ρ = 13.5 / 0.005 = 2700 kg/m³

That is 2.7 g/cm³ or 168.56 lb/ft³, the density of aluminium.

Frequently asked questions

What is the density formula?

Density is mass divided by volume: ρ = m / V. A block of 13.5 kg that fills 5 L (0.005 m³) has a density of 13.5 / 0.005 = 2700 kg/m³, the density of aluminium.

How do I find mass or volume from density?

Rearrange: m = ρ × V and V = m / ρ. Two litres of iron (7874 kg/m³) have a mass of 7874 × 0.002 = 15.748 kg. One kilogram of gold fills 1 / 19,320 m³, about 0.0518 L.

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1000. Water is 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³, and gold is 19.32 g/cm³ = 19,320 kg/m³. To get lb/ft³ from kg/m³, divide by 16.018463.

Are the material densities exact?

No. They are typical values near room temperature. Alloys, wood species, purity and temperature change the real figure, so use a measured value for precise work.
