Formula
Weight force on a world: W = m × g_world
Scale reading there (in the same unit you entered): reading = value × g_world ÷ 9.80665
Surface gravity g in m/s², NASA Planetary Fact Sheet: Moon 1.62, Mercury 3.70, Venus 8.87, Earth 9.80665 (standard gravity), Mars 3.71, Jupiter 24.79, Saturn 10.44, Uranus 8.87, Neptune 11.15, Pluto 0.62, Sun 274. 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg.
Worked example
A 70 kg person on the Moon: weight force 70 × 1.62 = 113.4 N. A scale calibrated on Earth reads 70 × 1.62 ÷ 9.80665 = 11.56 kg.
A 150 lb person on Mars reads 150 × 3.71 ÷ 9.80665 = 56.75 lb, and on Jupiter 150 × 24.79 ÷ 9.80665 = 379.18 lb. Their mass is 68.04 kg everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How much would I weigh on the Moon?
About one sixth of your Earth weight. The Moon's surface gravity is 1.62 m/s² against 9.80665 m/s² on Earth, a ratio of 0.165. A 70 kg person weighs 113.4 N there and a scale would read 11.56 kg.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is how much matter you are made of and never changes. Weight is the pull of gravity on that mass, W = m × g. A 70 kg person has a mass of 70 kg on Mars, but weighs only 70 × 3.71 = 259.7 N there instead of 686.5 N on Earth.
Where do the gravity values come from?
They are the surface gravity figures in the NASA Planetary Fact Sheet (nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/factsheet). Earth uses standard gravity, 9.80665 m/s². For Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune the value is at the 1 bar cloud level, since they have no solid surface.
How much would 150 lb weigh on Jupiter?
Jupiter's gravity is 24.79 m/s², 2.528 times Earth's. A 150 lb person would read 150 × 24.79 ÷ 9.80665 = 379.2 lb on a scale there, while their mass stays 68.04 kg.
