Formula

  • Volume: V = π × r² × h
  • Lateral surface area: L = 2 × π × r × h
  • Total surface area: A = 2 × π × r × (r + h)

Worked example

Radius 3 and height 5: V = π × 3² × 5 = 45π ≈ 141.3717, L = 2 × π × 3 × 5 = 30π ≈ 94.2478 and A = 2 × π × 3 × (3 + 5) = 48π ≈ 150.7964.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for the volume of a cylinder?

V = π × r² × h. With radius 3 and height 5, V = π × 9 × 5 = 45π, about 141.3717.

What is the lateral surface area?

It is the curved side only, without the two circular ends: 2 × π × r × h. For radius 3 and height 5 that is 30π, about 94.2478.

How do I find the total surface area?

Add the lateral area to the two circular ends: 2πrh + 2πr². For radius 3 and height 5 that is 30π + 18π = 48π, about 150.7964.

What if I only know the diameter?

Divide the diameter by 2 to get the radius. A can 6 wide has radius 3, so use 3 in the calculator.
