Formula

  • distance = sqrt((x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 - y1)^2)
  • midpoint = ((x1 + x2) / 2, (y1 + y2) / 2)

Worked example

Points (0, 0) and (3, 4): sqrt(3^2 + 4^2) = sqrt(25) = 5, and the midpoint is (1.5, 2).

Frequently asked questions

What is the distance formula?

d = √((x2 - x1)² + (y2 - y1)²), from the Pythagorean theorem. For (0, 0) and (3, 4): √(9 + 16) = 5.

How do I find the midpoint?

Average the coordinates: ((x1 + x2) ÷ 2, (y1 + y2) ÷ 2). For (1, 2) and (4, 6) the midpoint is (2.5, 4).

Does the order of the points matter?

No. The differences are squared, so swapping the points gives the same distance and the same midpoint.

Can I use negative coordinates?

Yes. For (-1, -1) and (2, 3) the differences are 3 and 4, so the distance is 5.
