Formula

With x = inches of height over 5 feet (60 in), weights in kilograms:

Formula Men Women
Devine 50 + 2.3x 45.5 + 2.3x
Robinson 52 + 1.9x 49 + 1.7x
Miller 56.2 + 1.41x 53.1 + 1.36x
Hamwi 48 + 2.7x 45.5 + 2.2x

Centimetres are converted at 2.54 cm per inch. The average is the mean of the four, and pounds use 2.2046 lb per kg.

Worked example

A man 175 cm tall is 68.898 in, so x = 8.898. Devine 50 + 2.3 × 8.898 = 70.5, Robinson 68.9, Miller 68.7, Hamwi 72.0. The average is 70.0 kg (154.4 lb).

Frequently asked questions

What is ideal body weight?

It is a height-based estimate of a healthy weight, first developed for drug dosing. It ignores build, muscle and age, so treat it as a rough guide, not a target you must hit.

How does the Devine formula work?

For men it is 50 kg plus 2.3 kg for every inch over 5 feet; for women 45.5 kg plus 2.3 kg per inch. A man 175 cm tall is 8.9 inches over 5 feet, so 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 = 70.5 kg.

Why do the four formulas give different answers?

Each was fitted to different data. For a 175 cm man they give 70.5 (Devine), 68.9 (Robinson), 68.7 (Miller) and 72.0 kg (Hamwi), averaging 70.0 kg. The spread shows how approximate the idea is.

Is ideal weight better than BMI?

Neither measures body composition. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at 175 cm is about 56.7 to 76.3 kg, a wider range than these formulas. Use both only as estimates, and ask a health professional about your own situation.
