Formula

  • Lowest weight = 18.5 x height (m)^2
  • Highest weight = 24.9 x height (m)^2
  • Pounds = kilograms / 0.45359237

Worked example

Height 175 cm: 1.75^2 = 3.0625. Low end 18.5 x 3.0625 = 56.7 kg (124.9 lb). High end 24.9 x 3.0625 = 76.3 kg (168.1 lb).

Frequently asked questions

How is the healthy weight range calculated?

Multiply your height in metres squared by 18.5 for the low end and by 24.9 for the high end. At 1.75 m: 3.0625 x 18.5 = 56.7 kg and 3.0625 x 24.9 = 76.3 kg.

Why 18.5 to 24.9?

This is the World Health Organization band for normal weight in adults. Below 18.5 is underweight and 25 or more is overweight.

Does the range apply to everyone?

No. It is for adults. Muscle mass, age, build and ethnicity all matter, and children, pregnant women and older adults need different guidance.

What if I am outside the range?

The range is a screening guide, not a goal for everyone. Talk to a doctor or dietitian before changing your weight. The calorie deficit calculator can help plan gradual loss.
