Formula
Calories = MET × body weight (kg) × duration (hours)
Calories per hour is MET × body weight (kg).
Worked example
MET 8, 70 kg, 30 minutes: 8 × 70 × 0.5 = 280 kcal, which is 560 kcal per hour.
Frequently asked questions
What is a MET?
A MET (metabolic equivalent of task) compares the energy of an activity to resting. Sitting quietly is 1 MET; brisk walking is about 3.5 and running at a steady pace is about 8 to 10.
How do you calculate calories burned from METs?
Calories = MET × body weight in kg × hours. A 70 kg person doing a MET 8 activity for 30 minutes burns 8 × 70 × 0.5 = 280 kcal.
Where do I find the MET value for my activity?
Published compendiums of physical activities list MET values. Typical values: walking 3.5, cycling at a moderate pace 6 to 8, swimming laps 6 to 8, running 8 to 12.
How accurate is the result?
It is an estimate. Fitness, body composition, terrain and intensity change the real figure, and the total includes the calories you would burn at rest anyway.
