Formula

  • Add VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100), VAT = gross − net
  • Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), VAT = gross − net

Worked example

Adding 20% to a net price of 200: 200 × 1.20 = 240, so VAT is 40. Removing 20% from 240: 240 ÷ 1.20 = 200 net, VAT 40.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, 200 × 1.20 = 240, so the VAT is 40.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, 240 ÷ 1.20 = 200, so the VAT is 40. Do not subtract 20% of 240, which would give 192.

Why is removing 20% not the same as subtracting 20%?

VAT is charged on the net price, not on the gross one. VAT is 20% of 200 (40), which is only 16.7% of 240.

Which VAT rate should I use?

Use the rate that applies to your goods or service in your country. Rates differ between places and products, so check with your tax authority.
