Formula
total cost = amount invested + extra costs
net profit = final value − total cost
ROI = net profit ÷ total cost × 100
Worked example
You invest 8,000, pay 500 in fees and receive 10,200:
- Total cost is 8,000 + 500 = 8,500
- Net profit is 10,200 − 8,500 = 1,700
- ROI is 1,700 ÷ 8,500 × 100 = 20%
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate ROI?
ROI = (final value − total cost) ÷ total cost × 100. With 8,000 invested, 500 of fees and 10,200 received, the profit is 1,700 on a cost of 8,500, so ROI is 20%.
Should fees be included?
Yes. Fees, commissions and other costs raise your total cost and lower the true return, so enter them as extra costs.
What does a negative ROI mean?
You got back less than you spent. Putting in 1,000 and receiving 750 is a 250 loss, an ROI of −25%.
Does ROI account for time?
No. A 20% ROI in one year is far better than 20% in ten. For a yearly rate over several years, use the CAGR calculator.
