Formula
range = maximum - minimummidrange = (maximum + minimum) ÷ 2mean absolute deviation = (|x1 - mean| + ... + |xn - mean|) ÷ n
Worked example
Data 3, 7, 7, 19, 24, 5:
- Minimum 3, maximum 24, range = 24 - 3 = 21
- Midrange = 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5
- Mean = 65 ÷ 6 = 10.833
- Mean absolute deviation = 42.667 ÷ 6 = 7.111
Frequently asked questions
How do you find the range of a data set?
Subtract the smallest value from the largest. For 3, 7, 7, 19, 24 and 5 the range is 24 - 3 = 21.
What is the midrange?
The midrange is the halfway point between the minimum and maximum: (24 + 3) ÷ 2 = 13.5 for the example above. It is quick to compute but sensitive to extreme values.
What is mean absolute deviation?
It is the average distance of the values from their mean. The example has a mean of 10.83 and a mean absolute deviation of 7.11, so values typically sit about 7 away from the mean.
What are the limits of the range as a measure of spread?
It only uses two values, so a single extreme number changes it a lot. The interquartile range or the standard deviation gives a steadier picture of the spread.
