Formula
new value = value × (1 + percent ÷ 100)
amount added = value × percent ÷ 100
Worked example
Increase 80 by 25%: 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20, so the new value is 80 + 20 = 100.
Frequently asked questions
How do I increase a number by a percentage?
Multiply the number by (1 + percent ÷ 100). To raise 80 by 25%, calculate 80 × 1.25 = 100.
How do I find only the amount of the increase?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100, then add that to the original. For 200 and 15%, the increase is 200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30, giving 230.
Can a number increase by more than 100%?
Yes. An increase of 100% doubles the number and 200% triples it. For example, 70 increased by 100% is 140.
Does increasing by 10% and then decreasing by 10% return the original?
No. 100 increased by 10% is 110, and 110 decreased by 10% is 99, because the second percentage applies to a larger base.
