Formula

Waist-to-hip ratio = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference

WHO abdominal obesity cut-offs: 0.90 or more for men, 0.85 or more for women.

Worked example

A woman with a waist of 80 cm and hips of 100 cm: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.80, which is below the 0.85 cut-off. A man at 95 cm and 100 cm has 0.95, above the 0.90 cut-off.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate waist-to-hip ratio?

Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. A waist of 80 cm and hips of 100 cm give 80 / 100 = 0.80.

What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?

The World Health Organization treats a ratio of 0.90 or more in men and 0.85 or more in women as abdominal obesity. A woman at 0.80 is below the cut-off, a man at 0.95 is above it.

Where should I measure my waist and hips?

Measure the waist at the narrowest point or midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, and the hips at the widest part of the buttocks. Use a tape measure, relaxed, and the same unit for both.

Does the unit matter?

No, as long as both numbers use the same unit. 32 inches over 40 inches is 0.80, exactly the same as 80 cm over 100 cm.
