Formula

All four scales are converted through Kelvin:

  • K = °C + 273.15
  • K = (°F + 459.67) × 5/9
  • K = °R × 5/9
  • and back: °C = K − 273.15, °F = K × 9/5 − 459.67, °R = K × 9/5

Temperatures below absolute zero (0 K) are rejected.

Worked example

Convert 100 °C to Fahrenheit: K = 100 + 273.15 = 373.15, then °F = 373.15 × 9/5 − 459.67 = 212 °F. The same temperature is 373.15 K or 671.67 °R.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. For 100 °C that is 100 × 1.8 + 32 = 212 °F.

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. For 98.6 °F that is (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 37 °C.

What is the Kelvin scale?

Kelvin starts at absolute zero and has the same step size as Celsius, so K = °C + 273.15. Room temperature of 20 °C is 293.15 K.

What is Rankine?

Rankine starts at absolute zero like Kelvin but uses Fahrenheit-sized degrees: °R = °F + 459.67. Water freezes at 491.67 °R.
