Formula

  • Wh = Ah × V and Ah = mAh ÷ 1000
  • Pack voltage: V_pack = V_cell × series count
  • Pack capacity: Ah_pack = Ah_cell × parallel count
  • Pack energy: Wh_pack = V_pack × Ah_pack

Worked example

A 3000 mAh, 3.7 V cell is 3 Ah × 3.7 V = 11.1 Wh. Wired as 4 in series and 2 in parallel (4S2P) the pack is 4 × 3.7 = 14.8 V, 2 × 3000 = 6000 mAh and 14.8 × 6 = 88.8 Wh.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert mAh to Wh?

Divide mAh by 1000 to get Ah, then multiply by the voltage. A 3000 mAh cell at 3.7 V is 3 x 3.7 = 11.1 Wh.

How do I convert Wh to mAh?

Divide Wh by the voltage to get Ah, then multiply by 1000. 11.1 Wh at 3.7 V is 3 Ah, which is 3000 mAh. Without the voltage the conversion is not possible.

How do series and parallel cells combine?

Cells in series add voltage and keep the capacity; strings in parallel add capacity and keep the voltage. A 4S2P pack of 3000 mAh, 3.7 V cells is 14.8 V, 6000 mAh and 88.8 Wh.

Is the nominal voltage the real voltage?

No. Voltage falls as a cell discharges, so Wh from the nominal voltage is an estimate. Check the datasheet. Results are for learning and design checks, not safety certification.
