Formula

  • Mass percent (w/w): solute mass ÷ solution mass × 100
  • Volume percent (v/v): solute volume ÷ solution volume × 100
  • Mass by volume (w/v): solute grams ÷ solution mL × 100 (grams per 100 mL)
  • Parts per million: percent × 10,000

Worked example

10 g of salt in 60 g of solution: 10 ÷ 60 × 100 = 16.67 % (166,666.67 ppm).

25 mL of ethanol in 250 mL of solution is 10 % v/v, and 5 g in 250 mL is 2 % w/v.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mass percent formula?

Mass percent = mass of solute ÷ total mass of solution × 100. Dissolving 10 g of salt to make 60 g of solution gives 10 ÷ 60 × 100 = 16.67 %.

What is volume percent?

Volume percent (v/v) is the volume of solute divided by the total volume of solution, times 100. 25 mL of ethanol in 250 mL of solution is 10 % v/v. Volumes of liquids do not always add exactly, so use the final measured volume.

What does mass by volume (w/v) mean?

It is grams of solute per 100 mL of solution. 5 g in 250 mL is 5 ÷ 250 × 100 = 2 % w/v. Unlike the other two it can go above 100 % for very dense solutions.

How do I turn a percent into ppm?

Multiply the percent by 10,000. A 2 % solution is 20,000 ppm. For w/v solutions this is mg of solute per litre.
